Marco! Polo!

In a world of ever growing communication, the way we communicate has changed. Where we used to have to use the telephone to make a phone call, which required us to remember the persons phone number, we can now use a variety of other technology out there to put forth our efforts in communicating with a friend, a loved one, a relative, or a coworker.

An example of this form of communication could be that of the Marco Polo Video Walkie Talkie app for Android and iOS users.

Marco Polo is a communication format that allows the user to video a message to a friend. If the friend happens to be on their phone they can automatically be notified of the incoming video message and click and watch it "live". If they are busy during the video, the video sits and waits patiently for the user to watch the video.

The user can then respond in return with their own video. There are features of drawing on the video itself within the app, with doodles and filters. This "walkie talkie" in essence allows users to have one-on-one video time with someone without the stressor of having to be "live".

This is a form of communication I've recently adopted in my own personal life to communicate better with my brother and sister-in-law who moved to Indiana in early 2017.

This form of digital communication allows me to see and hear videos of my soon-to-be niece. It allows a more updated form of communication that lets me "be in front of her" without actually being in front of her live.

This format of communication has caused communicators to readdress how people can communicate via other technology. Yes, if you're an iPhone user FaceTime is an option, but this feature in Marco Polo allows the user to be direct, but also indirect at the same time. Future technology indeed!

Visual Communication

As an artist, designer and creator it's important that I stay up to date on applications, programs and other things I can use to create. As a marketer and communicator the same can be said because I need to be able to communicate to my audience in a manner that caters to what they want. If I want to utilize social media to get my message out, it's important that I not only make sure my statement reaches my audience, but my visual content is designed in a manner that is easily readable. This is often a step missed in communication because we think we can just put our message out there by informal means, when in reality if we want to stand out it must be designed accordingly. This requires training on a communicator and marketers part. An easily accessible application that is now available on a smart phone or tablet (and computer) is that of Canva. "Canva  is a user-friendly design tool that makes it possible for businesses, marketers, bloggers, and other individua...

News Consumption

In the days of old, consumption of news, or things deemed worthy to be informative to the people was often found in formats that are quickly sliding into the past. Formats such as print advertisements, magazines, and even print newspapers are quickly loosing their edge to the digital age. Image via Google Now news consumption is accessed across a broad selection of digital platforms such as Google, Yahoo! News, social media and more. In a digital news report in 2015 (Hand, 2018) , it was found that individuals consume news more in the following ways: 11% paid for news online 26% accessed it thru a smart phone 32% shared news stories through email and social media (Hand, 2018). News consumption has changed because we now often don't even garner it from newsworthy sites. We see news without seeking out news via our platform of choice.  Image via Google How do you consume news? Are you of the age who still purchases a newspaper, as my own parents do? I have vast...

Are You in Style? Or Out?

Communication in it's simplest form can be defined as the exchanging or imparting of information or news. In essence, this hasn't changed at all. We still exchange and impart information and news anywhere and everywhere and to anyone who will listen. It's the methods of HOW we communicate now in the digital era that have changed. A family watching television in their home, circa 1955. Image via Google &  Cnn.com The "old" style more often than not was that of face-to-face communication. It then delved into radio and television and all of the news and information we could now glean from hearing or watching. Now as we progress in a very digital age, the style in which we communicate is more sophisticated and progressive that you have to keep up or be left behind. Now in the "new" style you can watch "TV" on social media platforms. You can use YouTube, Instagram, Facebook via your digital tablet, your computer, your smartphone, and m...
